Course Overview

The course is aimed at improving your bridge: both your bidding and play of the cards. The emphasis will be on gaining understanding and becoming a better partner. Standard English Acol is the assumed bidding system.

On the first week there will be a review of the Acol bidding system (the preferred bridge bidding system in the UK) when the opponents are silent. In subsequent weeks the focus will be on the auctions where both sides enter the bidding. Specific attention will be given to the most frequently encountered situations, The Overcall, The Takeout Double, and the much misunderstood Pre-emptive bidding. Time will also be spent on methods of coping with these bids, including The Negative Double.

The hands that you will play will be selected to bring out various aspects of bidding, play and defence. And much of the teaching will be aimed at improving your defence and card play.

Those attending are encouraged to play bridge at least once a week outside the lessons. Often this is accomplished by informal arrangements to meet in each others homes, or by attending the Monday afternoon bridge sessions, where help is available.

Teaching Format

Each week there will be an talk, illustrated when this helps understanding, and supported by handouts that summarise the information in an easy to use format. After the talk there is a supervised play session with carefully prepared hands. This period provides an opportunity to establish that you have understood the material and can put it into practice. There is also a social break with free refreshments.

The course will be given by Phil Cooke, an experienced lecturer and tutor, and a full member of The English Bridge Union Teachers Association.

Is It Suitable?

The course will appeal to anyone that already plays bridge and wants to improve. Those attending previous courses include
