Bridge Books
Really Easy Bidding by Sandra Landy. Published by the EBU at £11.99 This is the definitive book on Standard English Acol bidding. The author, Sandra Landy, is a former World Champion and highly regarded teacher. She reviewed the Acol system, as now played, and put together a joined-up system suitable for teaching to beginners. It also provides a sound foundation for playing bridge at the highest levels. Anyone learning bridge from an EBU trained teacher should be learning this system. Moreover it is sufficiently consistent with Acol that was taught 25years ago that anyone that can play this system is in a good position to play with almost any UK player. This is the basic reference book that should be owned by anyone that is serious about learning Acol. Whenever you have a bidding problem use this book to look up what should have happened. When you hardly ever need need it are you ready to move on. |

Really Easy Modern Acol by Sandra Landy. Published by the EBU at £9.99 The methods in this book build on those in Really Easy Bidding. If you plan to play competitively get this book and study it carefully. But be warned: once you advance beyond the basic level of Acol there are few standards. To play most of the methods and conventions in this book you need to buy two copies: one for yourself and another for your bridge partner. |
Really Easy Competitive Bidding by Sandra Landy. Published by the EBU at £9.99 When the opponents enter the bidding you need a whole raft of new bidding methods. This book explains the most important techniques for coping when both sides are bidding. |
Really Easy Slams by Sandra Landy Published by the EBU at £9.99 Yes, a whole book on how to bid slams. If you want to learn how to get to good slams more often, and equally how to avoid bidding unmakeable ones, this is book that is well worth study. However, do not let the title mislead you. The explanations are a model of clarity, but its not an easy subject! |
Bridge with Brunner by Michelle Brunner. Published by Batsford at £12.99 Michelle Brunner is a former World Champion and a full time bridge teacher. Moreover she plays Acol at international level. This book builds on Really Easy Bidding without going past the concepts and methods that are routinely used and understood by good Acol players. Michelle's has a knack for presenting bidding in a way that makes hazily understood concepts fall into place. |
Need To Know? Bridge by Andrew Robson. Published by Collins at £8.99 Andrew Robson is a former World and European Champion and a full time bridge teacher - player - writer . The book is suitable for a raw beginner and has diagrams that make some of the basic concepts easy to understand. It covers play as well as bidding. The book is pretty well consistent with Really Easy Bidding and mainstream methods except in one area. Andrew recommends that 1NT opening bid includes hands with a 5 card major. This is a controversial issue on this side of the Atlantic, and flies in the face of traditional Acol. However provided that this is kept in mind Need To Know is an ideal first bridge book. |
