Bridge CoursesMost people find that bidding is the most challenging part of learning how to play bridge. Expert and very experienced club players are fluent in a variety of bidding systems and conventions, but for most learning one system is enough. Fortunately almost everyone that plays in the UK uses a system called ACOL. It was invented in England, way back in the early days of bridge, and whilst staying near to its roots it had developed in various ways. Fortunately the EBU put together a task force and produced a tidied up version called Standard English Acol. it is supported by a set of text books authored by Sandra Landy, and published by the EBU. This is the system that we teach. How long does it take to learn bridge? Obviously it varies depending on various factors. But in general it depends on aptitude, effort and how much practice you get. Bridge is very much a game of mistakes, and the best way to improve is to play in an environment where you can learn by your mistakes, and from others. The gentle duplicate sessions on a Monday afternoon are an ideal environment for learning by playing. If you are not sure what to do there is help available. The Beginning Bridge course aims to get you playing with other learners within a term. By the end of two terms you will be ready to play with more experienced players. The teaching concentrates on the most common opening bids, and the follow up. Term 2 expands your bidding skills to cope with the less frequent, but more exciting bids where you can open at the 2 or 3 level. It also introduces competitive bidding, where both sides try to win the contract. Improve Your Bridge is either a second year course for recent learners, or a revision and improvement course for bridge players wanting a structured way of getting a better understanding of the basics. Term 1 has a strong focus on competitive bidding. Term 2 includes exploring slams and completes Standard English Acol at Foundation Level. Social players need go no further. But for those keen to play at club level, there is more to learn! |
