Handout on Two Level Bids
........................
Overview
Bidding and making a slam is one of the thrills of bridge. But many players are almost afraid of trying. This is because the opportunities seem to be so rare that one never gets much practice using the special bids that are used to explore possible slams. This series of three sessions aims to improve your slam bidding. With well shuffled cards slam opportunities are as frequent as one or two per session!. Topics that will be covered are:
- 2NT openings And how to respond
- Acol strong 2 openings And how to respond
- 2 club openings And how to respond
- Cue Bidding How to show your aces
- Blackwood To avoid playing in slams that cannot be made
There will also be handouts that summarise the information in an easy to use format, and records, with commentary of the hands played.
Note. The Monday tutorial on the 8th February will feature Roman Key Card Blackwood (RKCB), widely regarded as a big improvement on traditional Blackwood. The duplicate session that follows will have lots of hands that are in the slam zone, i.e. involve two level openings. This will be an opportunity to practice bidding and playing some big hands.
The hands that you will play will be selected to bring out various aspects of bidding, play and defence. And much of the teaching will be aimed at improving your defence and card play.
Teaching Format
Each week there will be an talk, illustrated when this helps understanding, and supported by handouts that summarise the information in an easy to use format. After the talk there is a supervised play session with carefully prepared hands. This period provides an opportunity to establish that you have understood the material and can put it into practice. There is also a social break with free refreshments.
The course will be given by Phil Cooke, an experienced lecturer and tutor, and a full member of The English Bridge Union Teachers Association.
Is It Suitable?
The course will appeal to anyone that already plays bridge and wants to make more slams; and avoid bidding impossible ones.
All teaching is in accordance with Standard English Acol. The English Bridge Union series of "Really Easy" bridge books includes a full sized book on Slam bidding. So Please do not think that you will learn everything in just three weeks!. What you should achieve is a much better understanding of two level opening bids, how to explore the possibility of making a slam and how to bail out if you stand to loose two tricks quickly.
