Supporting Partner after an Overcall
When your partner makes an overcall and you have the good fortune to have a fit, i.e. three or more cards in their suit, how do you proceed? Say the bidding goes
1♥ 1♠ pass ? What does 3♠ mean?
Does it mean I have a fit and the strength to invite game?
Or does it mean I am preempting with a fit and a weak and shapely hand?
In standard bidding you have only one choice. The unassuming cue bid gives you a choice!
2♥ says I have a fit and points
3♠ says This is a pre-empt
This tutorial will introduce you to using the opponents suit as a Cue Bid, to show strength, thereby releasing your normal fit showing bids. This often lets you disrupt the opponents bidding despite having a very weak hand.
The additional advantage of learning this bid is that it opens the door to a whole family of bids that expands your opportunities for preempting. And as all bridge players know, pre-empt's are good fun, as well as winning bridge.
